The Rogue uses a 1.5-liter turbocharged three-cylinder that is surprisingly punchy and efficient, and it offers a plug-in hybrid, but it does not offer a traditional hybrid. The Sportage gives you more choice: a gas model, a hybrid returning up to about 42 mpg combined, and a plug-in hybrid. If a standard hybrid is on your list, the Sportage has one and the Rogue does not.
This is a big gap. The Sportage is rated to tow up to 3,500 pounds properly equipped, while the Rogue tops out around 1,350 pounds. If you plan to pull a small trailer, watercraft, or camper, the Sportage is far better suited.
The Sportage carries the longer warranty by a wide margin: 5-year / 60,000-mile basic and 10-year / 100,000-mile powertrain, versus the Rogue’s 3-year / 36,000-mile basic and 5-year / 60,000-mile powertrain. Recent Rogues have improved in owner surveys, and the Sportage also rates well, so the longer Kia coverage is a meaningful tiebreaker.
Choose the Rogue if you like its turbo three-cylinder and interior. Choose the Sportage for the lower starting price, a true hybrid option, far more towing capability, the longer warranty, and the ownership perks at ALM Kia South.
